Most first-time Keys drivers think about U.S. 1. Card Sound Road instead crosses the Miami-Dade and Monroe county line before reaching the Card Sound Bridge in North Key Largo. Monroe County’s toll authority operates the bridge toll facility and maintains Card Sound Road and its five bridges.
The route has its own rhythm, with mangroves, water, and a quieter approach to the Keys. It also has an electronic toll. Cash is not accepted, so check the current SunPass, compatible transponder, or Toll-By-Plate details before the drive, especially if you are using a rental car or recently changed your plate address.
This is not a secret shortcut that fixes every Keys traffic day. It can still be affected by storms, road work, events, and the same limited island geography that shapes the rest of the Keys. Think of it as another route with its own feel and its own payment setup.
