Florida vehicle move-in

Get the car paperwork in the right order.

Florida car errands go smoother when insurance, license, title, and registration are not all fighting for first place.

First pass

Start with the clocks and the papers.

License

Put the 30-day license clock on your calendar

FLHSMV says a new Florida resident has 30 days to get a valid Florida driver license after establishing residency if they will drive on Florida roads.

Insurance

Get Florida insurance before the title and plate errand

Before registering a vehicle with at least four wheels, Florida requires proof of PIP and PDL coverage from a company licensed in Florida.

Registration

Do not let the 10-day registration rule sneak up

Out-of-state vehicles need Florida registration within 10 days after the owner becomes employed, places children in public school, or establishes residency.

Office

Use the local service center for the final list

County tax collectors and motor vehicle service centers handle much of the real counter work. Check the office before you bring the wrong papers.

Watch-out

Lienholders can slow the title part down.

If an out-of-state lender or lessor holds the title, ask the Florida office what they need before you wait in line.

Watch-out

Do not cancel insurance too early.

FLHSMV warns that Florida insurance needs to stay active during the registration period, and plates may need to be turned in before canceling coverage.

Watch-out

Address updates are separate work.

If you already have Florida records and move inside the state, update both license/ID and title/registration records.

Neighbor answer

The order is usually insurance, documents, office.

Get the Florida insurance question settled first, then gather your license and vehicle papers, then check the exact county office. If a lender has the title, if the vehicle is leased, or if your name changed, let the office tell you the extra step before you make the trip.
