Florida travel math

Put the tolls and airport drive in the same plan.

A cheap flight can get less cheap after tolls, parking, rental-car fees, and a slow highway. Look at the whole day before you choose.

First pass

Make the drive part of the booking.

Tolls

Price the drive before the car is packed

SunPass points drivers to a toll calculator that can estimate a Florida trip by start point, end point, payment type, and number of axles.

Rental car

Settle the rental toll choice at the counter

SunPass says rental drivers with SunPass or prepaid Toll-By-Plate can add the rental plate and set the rental dates. If you do not use that path, ask the rental company how its toll program charges you.

Traffic

Check FL511 before the last hour gets messy

FL511 is FDOT's official source for real-time traffic and travel information, including incidents, construction, travel times, and camera snapshots on major routes.

Airport

Choose the airport with the road in mind

Florida has many public-use and commercial-service airports. The easier flight is not always the easier drive, especially around Orlando, Tampa Bay, South Florida, and the Keys.

Watch-out

A toll road may not have a cash lane.

Many Florida toll roads have moved toward electronic tolling. Plan as if the plate and transponder details matter.

Watch-out

A rental plate is not your plate.

If you add a rental vehicle to a prepaid account, set the dates carefully and remove the vehicle or transponder when the trip is over.

Watch-out

Airport names can hide a long drive.

Two airports may serve the same region on paper. The better choice can change once tolls, traffic, parking, and rental return time are in the plan.

Neighbor answer

For Florida travel, the route is part of the price.

Look up tolls before you book the car, check the rental toll rule before you leave the counter, and check FL511 before the drive. If two airports look close enough, run both drives with traffic, tolls, parking, and rental return time in mind.
