Florida alligator safety works best with distance, pet care, daylight swimming, and the official nuisance alligator hotline.
Alligators are part of Florida’s water map, from big preserves to neighborhood ponds.
FWC treats alligators as a statewide wildlife issue. Waterfront homes, canals, lakes, golf-course ponds, parks, and boat ramps can all bring people close to alligator habitat. Serious injuries are rare, but the habits are simple enough to learn before there is a problem.
Keep distance. Do not feed alligators. Swim only in marked areas during daylight. Keep pets leashed and away from the water’s edge. If an alligator is causing concern, FWC has a nuisance alligator hotline and may send a contracted trapper.
Use that official call path instead of trying to handle the animal yourself. For a home search, ask about ponds, canals, fencing, pet routines, and HOA or community rules. The goal is not to be tense around every lake. It is to treat Florida water like Florida water.
