Florida exemption certificate numbers need a seller check
A Florida tax-exempt sale needs the right certificate, purchase, buyer, and payment trail, not only an exemption number.
A tax-free sale can feel simple at the counter. A customer hands over a number and expects the sales tax to come off, but the number is only one part of the record.
Florida Revenue has an online check for two common papers: the Annual Resale Certificate and the Consumer’s Certificate of Exemption. They do different jobs. A resale paper is for goods bought for resale, while an exemption paper covers the buyer and uses allowed by that certificate.
Payment matters too. For a government purchase, the government body generally must pay with its own funds. An employee’s personal card does not make the sale tax-free merely because the employee will be paid back.
Before removing sales tax, match the paper to the buyer, payment, and purchase. Keep a copy or the online check with the invoice. When the sale does not fit the usual pattern, ask Florida Revenue or a tax adviser before closing it out.
