Florida license plate refunds start before the registration date
A Florida license plate or decal refund can depend on surrender timing, proof, and the exact refund reason, so the plate paper should be handled before the date passes.
Turning in a Florida plate does not by itself create a refund. The reason and timing must fit a path on FLHSMV Form 83363.
For a renewal refund, surrender the plate and decal before the new term begins. The term starts at midnight on the owner’s birthday. Florida does not return part of the fee after that point. A two-year tag also does not create a refund for its second year once the term has begun.
The form has other narrow paths. One concerns an initial registration fee on a vehicle sold or given up within 90 days. Each path needs its own proof, so one refund reason cannot stand in for another.
Keep the plate, decal, registration, payment record, ID copy, and surrender receipt together. Read the current form before mailing the request. Then ask the tax collector or tag office which reason fits. Even when no refund is due, the surrender receipt can matter for insurance and a future plate credit.
