Green Mountain Scenic Byway puts Lake Apopka beside the hills

The Green Mountain Scenic Byway gives Central Florida a ridge-and-lake drive between Winter Garden, Lake Apopka, and Mount Dora.

Green Mountain Scenic Byway is a useful reminder that Central Florida is not one flat landscape.

The current corridor runs 45.2 miles between Winter Garden and Mount Dora, crossing the Lake Wales Ridge and the western edge of Lake Apopka. Along the way, the route connects Oakland, Montverde, Minneola, Astatula, and other Lake and Orange county places with hills, lake edges, small-town stops, cyclists, and old grove country.

It is not mountain driving in the western-state sense. It is Florida ridge driving: lower, greener, and easy to miss if the interstate is the only map in view. That difference helps explain why Lake County and west Orange County can feel removed from Orlando even when they are close by.

Check the current byway map before leaving, and choose any stop by name. An overlook, trailhead, park, or downtown has its own manager, hours, parking, and access rules. The drive works best when the route is settled first and there is room for one unhurried stop.
