Lilly Pulitzer moved to Palm Beach in the 1950s and opened a juice stand. The work stained her clothes, so she asked a dressmaker for a bright, loose dress that could hide citrus splashes. The first shift grew from that small problem.

The dress was a juice-stand uniform before it became resort fashion. Customers noticed the easy shape and vivid print, and Pulitzer began selling dresses beside the juice. A practical work dress had found a second job.

The brand later grew far beyond the island. Its origin still belongs to Palm Beach, where warm weather, citrus, shops, and social life met one useful bit of invention.
