Ybor City keeps Tampa's cigar story visible

Ybor City is Tampa's old cigar district, with hundreds of historic buildings still shaping the neighborhood.

Ybor City is the Tampa neighborhood where the cigar story still has walls and streets.

The historic district sits northeast of downtown Tampa. In its busy cigar years, it filled with factories, social clubs, workers’ homes, and shops. The National Park Service lists it as a National Historic Landmark. It also counts more than 950 historic buildings and structures from those years.

Walk Seventh Avenue and you can still feel the old city inside the new one. Brick buildings, balconies, clubs, shops, and side streets give the district more texture than a single landmark would.

The cigar story here was also an immigrant story. Cuban, Spanish, Italian, and other workers and families built a whole neighborhood around the factories. The result can feel festive and serious at the same time.

For a visit, use the historic district sources for the background. Then check current local pages for parking, events, and street closures before you go.
