Find the district first, then sort the school choices.

The state gives the broad school, choice, and health rules. The local district and school name the portal, proof of address, dates, school assignment, and records they need.

When a student first enters a Florida school, Florida Health requires a school-entry health exam. It must have been completed within one year before enrollment. The school also needs the Florida immunization certification record or an approved exemption.

A child may enter public kindergarten if the child is 5 on or before September 1 of that school year. First grade has another rule. It starts with age 6 by September 1 and also looks at prior public-school enrollment, an accepted private kindergarten, or the district's transfer rules. Ask the district about placement.

Sometimes. Each district and charter school must have a controlled open enrollment plan for public schools that have not reached capacity. Magnet, scholarship, and virtual options may add other paths. Each one can have its own window, seat limit, and forms, so check the district or program.

Start with proof of age and address. Add the health and immunization records, prior school records, and any custody or student-support papers that apply. The district gives the final list.

Ask the district right away. A student experiencing homelessness can enroll and attend while the school arranges for school, immunization, and other required records. Ask for the district's homeless-education liaison.
