A Florida teacher background check starts with the employer

If you want to teach in a Florida public school, call the district hiring office before you pick a fingerprint shop. The state’s current guide sends workers at traditional and charter public schools through the district employer. That first call can prevent a second trip and fee.

The job check and teacher certificate touch the same record, but they are not one step. To get a Florida educator certificate, you must finish state and federal criminal record checks. For a district job, the result goes to the employer and often then to the state certificate office. Yet prints taken before you have a job may need to be taken again. This is why the employer’s path comes first.

At a private school, ask the employer which path applies before sending prints. The state sets limits on who may use its separate route for a certificate, so it is not a walk-in check for every school job. Student teachers and others who will work directly with students also face screening rules. Their school or training program should give them the right route.
