Weston home projects can have a city file and an HOA file

Most Weston homes sit in private developments with an HOA. The city still has its own permits for building, drainage, trees, and zoning.

A Weston home project may need two green lights.

Most Weston homes are in private developments with an HOA. The city also handles building, engineering, tree, and zoning permits. Those records do different jobs.

Before a contractor starts, find the association and read its current rules. Ask whether written approval is needed. Then check the city permit list for the same work. HOA approval does not settle the city permit question. A city permit does not waive a private rule.

The overlap is easy to see in a private or gated community. The HOA may maintain roads, common landscaping, and other shared property. Yet a street tree or tree on HOA property still needs a city permit before removal.

Keep the association letter, city permit, inspection result, contractor file, and closeout together. That paper trail makes the next repair, insurance question, or sale easier to explain. It also keeps one community’s rule from being mistaken for every Weston neighborhood.
